How to cope when constantly feeling overwhelmed

Feeling overwhelmed is a common human experience. However, too much of it can be toxic to your health.  Toxic stress can negatively affect your body, your thoughts and feelings, and your behavior.

Stress can lead to mental slowness, forgetfulness, confusion, difficulty concentrating, and an impaired ability to solve problems. It can manifest as increased anxiety, irritability, or even hopelessness. Toxic stress can also weaken your immune system increasing your risk for illness.

If you are constantly feeling overwhelmed, there are simple steps that you can take to take back control:

1.     Identify the root cause of your overwhelm. What is causing you to feel overwhelmed? List down all the things that are making you to feel overwhelmed.

2.     Rank the items on your list from the highest stressor to the lowest stressor.

3.     For each of the items on your list, ask yourself what needs change for the stress level to go down.

4.     Identify if you can accomplish what is needed for each item on your own or if you need additional resources or help.

5.     For the items that you need additional help, reach out and ask for help or delegate.

Ask yourself: What one or two things, if taken off my plate would alleviate 80% of the stress that I feel right now?

6.     Block time off to work on your list in order of highest to lowest stress. Let go of perfectionism as you work through your list.

7.     Take regular breaks for self-care. Take a walk, take a bath, listen to some music, and engage in any activity that brings you joy. This will allow you to refill your tank and avoid running on empty.

8.     Celebrate your accomplishments. Stop and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small they may be.

Finally, practice gratitude. Practice self-compassion by looking back and being grateful for what you have already accomplished or the good things that are happening in your life.
